Dental Problems

Dogs and cats experience many of the same dental problems as we do ourselves. One of the most common problems is plaque formation, which in turn leads to the accumulation of tartar. This is the leading cause of all periodontal disease.
Plaque is the byproduct of normal food and saliva. It coats your teeth DAILY unless it is removed. When bacteria are added to the mix the plaque becomes tartar. The tartar that coats the teeth is composed of over 80% bacteria! That is like having a mouth full of infection. Is it any wonder your pet’s breath stinks? This tartar leads to cavity development, loose teeth that must be extracted, and gum infections/abscesses. This allows bacteria to invade the bloodstream where they can cause liver, kidney, and heart disease!
Please remember that animals do not exhibit the pain that goes along with these terrible problems in the mouth like we do. They cannot talk or protest about the discomfort they are experiencing—and this pain can be great, as any of you who have had a toothache can testify!
After this tartar forms NO amount of brushing or chewing on dental toys or biscuits will remove it because it is rock hard! It can only be removed by dental cleaning with an ultrasonic cleaning device that is very similar to the one your own dentist uses.
You may be aware of early dental problems in our pet if you notice a bad odor from the mouth, excessive licking or salivating, reluctance to chew hard food, staining of the hair around the mouth, swelling of the face or jaw, and red or bleeding gums!
Please do your pet a favor and get a dental examination performed if you notice any of the above warning signs.
Our concern is your pet’s continued good health!
