Neuter

This surgery removes the testicles of male dogs, cats, rabbits, rats, sugar gliders. This renders the animal sterile, but also removes the hormones that can cause other medical and behavioral problems.

Other very important reasons for neutering a male dog are:

  • Older male dogs can develop prostate cancer just like men. Neutering will eliminate this possibility.
  • Testicular cancer affects over 30% of older, intact male dogs. Neutering will eliminate this possibility.
  • Intact male dogs tend to roam. This will lead to getting lost, getting in fights, possibly getting hit by a car. Neutering greatly reduces the desire to roam.
  • Intact male dogs tend to urine mark their territory. Neutering will greatly reduce this behavior.

This surgery requires dogs remain in the hospital overnight after the surgery so we are able to adequately monitor their recovery. This allows for complete recovery from the anesthetic with staff monitoring, keeps the pet fairly restricted in its movement immediately after the surgery, and helps us determine if your pet is likely to bother the suture line at home.

Other very important reasons for neutering a male cat are:

  • The #1 cause of death in male cats is being Hit by a Car when they go outside. Neutering will discourage the desire to roam and stray!
  • Male cats tend to get into territorial FIGHTS. These bite wounds infect easily and can result in abscess formation that may require surgery. Neutering will discourage fighting behavior!
  • Male cats, no matter if indoor or outdoor, tend to mark their territory by Urine Spraying. When your cat does this in the home the resulting odor is very offensive. Neutering discourages this behavior!

Cats are released the same day of the surgery as they do not require sutures and the anesthetic is shorter-acting.
